FIELD FILM 001 · CÔTE D’IVOIRE · WEST AFRICA
Gboni · September 22, 2026 · Dan (Yacouba) cultural region
A remarkable encounter with a living masquerade tradition, where artistry, music, movement, and extraordinary balance come together.
A Dance Above the Ground
On September 22, 2026, during our LŪM Expeditions™ journey through Côte d’Ivoire, we stopped in the village of Gboni while traveling from Odienné toward Man, in western Côte d’Ivoire.
There, we witnessed and documented an extraordinary stilt-mask performance, locally identified during our visit as Guegbin.
Rising high above the ground, the masked dancer demonstrated remarkable balance, coordination, and physical agility. Costume, rhythm, movement, and community participation came together in one of the most visually memorable encounters of our West African expedition.
The Cultural World of the Stilt Masquerade
Gboni lies in western Côte d’Ivoire, in a region associated with Dan (Yacouba) cultural traditions near the Liberian border.
Across this wider cultural landscape, masquerade traditions bring together carved masks, costumes, music, dance, and community participation. Masks are not necessarily understood as isolated artistic objects; their significance may also emerge through performance and their relationships with particular communities.
The physical skill of stilt dancers offers an especially striking example of how performance can transform the experience of a mask. Height, movement, balance, and costume create a visual presence that cannot be fully communicated through a photograph of the object alone.
Guegbin: A Name Recorded in the Field
The performance was identified locally during our visit as Guegbin. The surrounding cultural region was identified as Dan (Yacouba), although the precise community affiliation of the performers has not yet been independently confirmed.
The spelling of Guegbin, the performers’ preferred community identification, and the specific cultural significance of this performance remain under investigation. These details will be updated as further documentation becomes available.

A Note from the Field
What fascinated me most was witnessing the mask come alive through movement. The dancer’s extraordinary balance, the music, and the energy surrounding the performance reminded me why photography and film are such important tools for visual anthropology.
A carved object can reveal remarkable craftsmanship. But when we experience a mask in the context of a living tradition, we begin to discover a much larger story.
