Maria Mitchell: Pioneer of Women in Astronomy
Maria Mitchell (1818โ1889) was the first professional female astronomer in the U.S. and a trailblazer for women’s rights and education. Born in a Quaker family on Nantucket, she discovered Miss Mitchell’s Comet in 1847, gaining international acclaim. She was the first woman inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and became a professor at Vassar College. Her research encompassed solar eclipses, sunspots, and planetary orbits.
