A Cultural Expedition into the Heart of the Xingu Indigenous Reserve. Deep in the Brazilian Amazon lies one of the most culturally significant and protected areas in South America: the Xingu Indigenous Reserve. Spanning 6.5 million acres—roughly the size of Massachusetts—this extraordinary region is home to 16 distinct Indigenous tribes, each maintaining their own language, customs, and ancestral knowledge systems.

While Indigenous peoples now own approximately 28% of the Amazon Basin, opportunities to respectfully visit and learn from authentic communities are rare. These communities are understandably cautious of outside influence, and most are located in extremely remote regions.

Yet, at Luminous Photo Expediitions, we offer one of the most intimate and authentic Indigenous experiences available today: an exclusive journey into the world of the Kuikuro people during their most important annual event—the Kuarup Ceremony.

Who Are the Kuikuro?

The Kuikuro are one of the Indigenous groups living within the Xingu Reserve, currently numbering around 600 people. Their village lies deep in a region of pristine rainforest, accessible only to a handful of certified operators. Despite their remote setting, the Kuikuro have opened their doors to cultural travelers with sincere hospitality and a desire to share their traditions.

The Kuarup Ceremony: Honoring the Spirits

The Kuarup Ceremony is a sacred funeral ritual held every August, honoring the tribe’s deceased members from the past year. It is a time of remembrance, strength, and communal resilience.

The ceremony itself spans several days of preparation, culminating in a powerful final day of dance, music, body painting, wrestling, and deeply symbolic rituals. Far from being a somber event, the Kuarup is a celebration of life and the cycle of existence, rooted in centuries of ancestral tradition.

Travelers joining our expedition are invited to arrive on August 10, allowing for full immersion in the preparations and cultural context. The climax of the ceremony takes place on August 13, offering an unforgettable experience of Indigenous spirituality and community.

A Journey Like No Other

Our Kuikuro Kuarup Expedition begins in Canarana, a small town in the state of Mato Grosso. From there, you will be greeted by our English-speaking guide and local driver—among the few authorized to enter the Indigenous territory—who will accompany you throughout the experience.
